Should I replace my MacBook battery myself or pay Apple?

Lithium-ion batteries offer exceptional performance that has revolutionized everything from tiny flashlights to Ford trucks. Yes, you have to take them seriously if they show any signs of physical failure, such as swelling or smoking, but luckily this is extremely rare relative to the vast number of lithium-ion batteries in use.

Wear and tear over time is common, and for Mac laptop users accustomed to long periods of use it can be frustrating to now be able to eke out just a few hours of use. Unlike older generation batteries, lithium-ion batteries do not have a memory effect, and incomplete charging reduces their maximum capacity. Instead, over time, the battery's chemistry causes the safe charging capacity to gradually deplete.

Apple does offer a pretty lengthy warranty on laptop batteries: If your battery drops below its ability to maintain 80 percent charge within the first year (or three years with AppleCare+), Apple will replace it for free. Outside of this period, the battery appears to be available in the US for $159 for MacBook Air models and $249 for MacBook Pro models. If it must be sent for repair, you will also need to pay for shipping.

The price is high enough that you may consider replacing the battery yourself. Buying a brand new battery from Batterymall only costs one-fifth of the official price, and comes with replacement tools and tutorials. I usually learn Mac laptop replacement steps from Kingsener's youtube account.

With older laptops, such as the 13-inch MacBook Air (early 2017), most people shouldn't have any trouble replacing the battery.

Replacing batteries is a whole different level of difficulty with newer products because Apple is using adhesives more than before to hold things in place, often in place of screws and other connectors. This requires more care during disassembly and more replacement parts to restore. Replacement parts for new products are also more expensive.

So, in addition to taking 30 to 120 minutes and nearly 50 steps to replace the battery on an M1 MacBook Air (Late 2020), and requiring some tools that you may not have if you haven't done this before, if you're worried you can buy our Take the battery to a repair shop for replacement.
