How to replace the battery in a Macbook Pro?

MacBook Pro batteries from 2016–2017 are glued inside the chassis. This replacement requires careful handling, patience, and the right tools. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, we recommend seeking professional help.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Pentalobe (P5) screwdriver

  • Torx T5 screwdriver

  • Tri-point Y0 screwdriver

  • Plastic spudger

  • Suction cup

  • Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher)

  • Replacement battery (Ensure compatibility with MacBook Pro 2016 or 2017 model)

  • Anti-static wrist strap (optional but recommended)

Compatibility Checklist

Before starting, confirm your MacBook model:

  • Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac

  • Check if your model is a MacBook Pro 13-inch or 15-inch (2016 or 2017)

Step-by-Step Battery Replacement Process

Step 1: Power Down & Prepare

  1. Shut down your MacBook.

  2. Unplug all cables and accessories.

  3. Flip the MacBook over and place it on a soft surface.

Step 2: Remove the Bottom Case

  1. Use a P5 screwdriver to remove the 6 screws securing the bottom cover.

  2. Carefully lift the cover using a suction cup or pry tool from the edges.

Step 3: Disconnect the Battery

  1. Use a plastic spudger to disconnect the battery from the logic board.

  2. Wait 2–3 minutes to ensure the capacitors discharge.

Step 4: Remove Other Components (if needed)

  • Depending on the model, you may need to remove or loosen:

Speaker modules

Trackpad ribbon cables

Be extra careful not to damage the cables or connectors.

Step 5: Loosen the Battery Adhesive

  1. Apply isopropyl alcohol around the edges of the battery cells.

  2. Wait a minute for the adhesive to soften.

  3. Slowly slide a plastic card or spudger under each battery cell to loosen it.

  4. Never use metal tools to pry the battery — risk of puncture and fire.

Step 6: Remove the Old Battery

  • Once all adhesive is loosened, gently lift out the battery pack.

Step 7: Install the New Battery

  1. Place the new battery in position.

  2. If it comes with pre-applied adhesive, press down firmly to secure it.

  3. Reconnect the battery to the logic board.

Step 8: Reassemble the MacBook

  1. Reattach any cables or components removed earlier.

  2. Screw the bottom cover back using the P5 screwdriver.

Step 9: Battery Calibration (Optional but Recommended)

To maximize the lifespan and accuracy of your new battery:

  1. Charge it to 100%.

  2. Use it until the MacBook shuts down.

  3. Leave it off for 5 hours.

  4. Charge back to 100% without interruption.

Replacement Complete!

Your MacBook Pro should now power on with a fresh battery. If it doesn’t start right away, double-check the battery connector and try an SMC reset.
